Membranes for alkaline water electrolysis (AWE)

Multiple Membranes for PEM fuel cells are displayed against a smooth blue gradient backdrop.

The alkaline water electrolysis application ranks among the oldest electrochemical processes having well-matured system’s design. The progress since 2010 allowed significant improvement to that-time state-of-the-art technology. The central part of the units is the fumasep anion-exchanged-membrane FAAM that facilitates the increase of pressure difference. The membrane supports also the enhancing of absolute operational pressure, helping users to optimize Hydrogen production in MW scale. The FAAM membrane features reduction of the potential, too, which yields higher HHV (higher-heat-value) efficiency at increased current density compared to the porous separators. The FAAM membranes are available typically with reinforcement, enabling adoption of the membrane to a large cell format and reducing the swelling of membrane.

The FAAM-membranes are made from polyaromates containing heteroatoms. These membranes facilitate the HHV-efficiency as high as 85 % at current density 0,8 A/cm2. The membranes are characterized by particularly low swelling ratio and superior strength properties.

The overview of the membrane's propoerties is summarized in the following table:
